Mangaluru, Sept 2: The 2nd Additional District and Sessions court has sentenced a 27-year-old man from Kateel in Dakshina Kannada to four years of imprisonment on finding him guilty of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl in 2014.
According to charge-sheet filed by the Ullal police, Yatish Karkera kidnapped the girl by enticing her with buying new clothes and a mobile phone. Karkera confined the girl to a room in Ullal and sexually assaulted her. He also threatened her against reporting the incident to the police.
Karkera was arrested and charged under sections 342 (wrongfully confining a person), 376 (rape), 366 (kidnapping) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code and under section 8 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
The judge B.R. Pallavi sentenced Karkera to four years of imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 20,000. He was also sentenced to one year imprisonment for the offence under section 506 of the IPC, six months imprisonment for the offence under section 342 of the IPC and to three months of imprisonment and Rs 5,000 fine for the offence under section 366 of the IPC. The judge acquitted Karkera of offence under section 376 of the IPC.
The judge said all the sentences would run concurrently. She directed Karkera to pay Rs. 15,000 of the total fine of Rs. 25,000 to the girl as compensation. The judge also directed the District Legal Services Authority to arrange for payment of compensation to the girl under the Karnataka Victim Compensation Scheme. C. Venkataramanaswamy appeared on behalf of the prosecution.
