First Additional District and Sessions Judge C.M. Joshi sentenced Vasu Poojary of Yellathur village in Mangaluru taluk after he was charged under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code.
Poojary, who was working in a hotel, hacked his mother Rithi Poojary (61) and sister Vimala (25) to death on December 11, 2009, for unknown reasons.
However, he claimed that he was mentally unstable and committed the crime unknowingly.
Poojary, however, could not substantiate his claims through medical records. The court had directed to hold medical checks-up at National Institute of Mental Health and Neuroscience, Bengaluru.
Though medical reports claimed that he was mentally unstable, he was charged with murder as he was not under medication during the time of the incident.
He was also directed to pay a fine of Rs. 5,000 and if he failed to do so, undergo an additional six months in jail. The court also asked the jail authorities to take the convict to NIMHANS, Bengaluru, every six months for treatment.
