Mangaluru, Jul 17: A suspected saffron activist has been arrested for spreading communal hatred through and making false and provocative allegations against Muslim college students through WhatsApp groups.
Ashish, a resident of Asaigoly, Konaje, was picked up from Kunil Complex at Kankanady in the city by the sleuths of Mangaluru North police station yesterday.
He was booked under sections 153 A (spreading hatred between communities), and 505 (issuing mischievous statements in public) of Indian Penal Code. He was produced before a local court which remanded him to 15 days of judicial custody.
He was one of the miscreants who had been constantly spreading false messages against the youths of Muslim community for a long time. One of such messages stated that a Muslim student by name Mohammed Nadeem along with his friends had been harassing girls from Hindu community in a particular college. The message had gone viral.
The arrest was carried out following the directions of city police commissioner T R Suresh, and under the guidance of deputy commissioners of police Hanumantharaya (law and order) and Uma Prshanth (traffic and crime) as well as central subdivision assistant commissioner of police,Uday Nayak. City crime branch police inspector Shanataram Kunder was also part of the operation. It is learnt that police may arrest more miscreants for misusing WhatsApp to spread communal hatred.
