Mangaluru, Sep 9: The activists of Bajrang Dal, who are known for attacking Muslim boys talking to Hindu girls in Mangaluru, played a “responsible role” on Tuesday by informing police when three class mates from different communities were questioned by a few youths for being together at City Centre Mall, in the heart of the city.

On the other hand the city police, who had faced criticism for failing to reach the spot on time when a Muslim youth was stripped, tied to an electric pole and thrashed by Sangh Parivar activists at Attavar on August 24, this time reached the spot and within a few minutes and tried their best to convince the boy and girls to lodge a complaint against those who questioned them.

However the 22-year-old youth belonging to Hindu community and his two female class mates including one Muslim girl, clarified the police that no one assaulted them. They also reportedly requested the police not to inform their parents about the incident.

S Murugan, the Commissioner of Mangaluru City Police told Coastaldigest.com that the students were only confronted and not assaulted in the mall.

He said that the police acted swiftly and prevented a possible physical assault on the students. “But, we will talk to the students again and take the case forward,” he added.

Sources from Mangaluru North Police Station said that Arjun and his two female friends had come to the city for sight-seeing. Having visited some places, the trio came to the mall at about 2 p.m. As they were coming out of the mall at about 3.30 p.m., a group of persons confronted the youth for having come with his classmates who belonged to different communities.

The police said that they intervened soon after they received information on possible moral policing and took the three students away in a police vehicle. After taking them to a safe location, the three students were asked to narrate the incident and file a complaint. But they refused to pursue the matter and wanted to get back to their hometown. The students then left the city in a bus without filing any complaint.
