Mangaluru, Mar 18: Urban Development Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake and Forests, Environment and Ecology B Ramanath Rai laid the foundation stone for the proposed musical fountain at Kadri Park and other developmental works at a foundation-laying programme jointly organised by Mangaluru Urban Development Authority (MUDA) and Department of Horticulture, Dakshina Kannada here on Saturday.
Speaking after inaugurating the programme, Mr Sorake said that as the coastal city of Mangaluru was growing steadily, it was essential to provide better basic facilities in the city to give a boost to tourism in Dakshina Kannada. The facelift of the Kadri Park and several beautification works is a step towards making the park a tourist spot, for which a special fund of Rs 4.97 crores was sanctioned by the government, he said.
The urban development ministry has taken up several programmes such as drinking water supply project in Bantwal and other taluks of the district at an approximate cost of Rs 995 crore. As per the proposal of the local MLA, the ministry has decided to take up a project to supply water from Kudremukh to Baikampady industrial area through pipeline. The process of conversion of Puttur and Ullal town municipal councils to city municipalities is already underway, while the Akrama-Sakrama process will be brought into effect shortly, he informed.
He said that with the selection of Mangaluru as one of the port cities to be converted as ‘Smart City’, stress would be given to providing all necessary infrastructure and facilities towards transforming the coastal city into a Smart city.
Mr Ramanath Rai spoke on the occasion and said that for the development of the city, it was necessary to give importance to cleaning and beautification of the surroundings.
He was speaking after inaugurating the project to construct living quarters in Padavu village for police personnel part who were part of a special state-wide operation.
Health minister U T Khader, Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim, Mangaluru South MLA J R Lobo, Mangaluru North MLA Mohideen Bava, MLC Ivan D’Souza, Mayor of Mangaluru City Corporation Jacintha Alfred, and several others were present.
