Mangaluru, Nov 6: The controversial issue of Muslim women wearing headscarf being banned from educational institutions has raised its head once again in Mangaluru.
Muslim students pursuing their nursing course in Srinivas Institute of Nursing Sciences, located at Valachil in Mangaluru taluk were reportedly sent out of their classes for sporting headwear inside the classroom.

Reliable sources said, as per the decision taken by the college management a few of days ago, the principal of the institution had opposed to the entry of Muslim students wearing headgear in classrooms. The concerned parents vented their ire against the management's decision in a meeting with college authorities. Expressing their disagreement with the decision, the parents have jointly urged the college management to take back their decision not to allow students sporting headgear in the classrooms.
A verbal clash reportedly ensued between the college authorities and parents of the Muslim students, resulting in a tense situation for some time. Parents of the concerned students are apprehensive over the decision affecting the studies of their children.
In the best interests of the students and their studies, the parents urged that the college management should revert its decision regarding the headscarf during the current academic year.
Parent of one of the students said that the management had agreed to revert its decision for the current year and would implement the ban on headscarf from the following year.
Principal of the college Ramakrishna said that the parents had been asked to give their objection against the management's decision in writing, following which the management would announce its next decision.
