Mangaluru: Never asked for a portion of Hindu crematorium, clarifies mosque

Mangaluru, Nov 27: The management committee of Mohiuddin Jumma Masjid, Jeppu, has made it clear that it had requested Mangaluru Tahsildar to provide an unused plot of government land to be used as burial ground, and never asked for land already allotted as cremation or burial ground by other faiths, as alleged.

In a press release, the committee president and members said that they had not asked a portion of the Hindu crematorium located at Nadndigudda. Since there was shortage of space for burial on the land allotted by the district administration to the masjid, they had appealed to provide them an unused plot of land.

Having used the same burial ground on a plot of 21 cents from a century, the ground faces shortage for space to have more burials. Since there are nearly 50,000 Muslim families living around the area, it has become hard to utilise the same land for further use. In this regard, the Jumma masjid committee has requested the district administration for additional land.

The crux of the matter is that the masjid committee has requested for an 0.26 acre land (Survey No. 251/1) in one of the surrounding area that remains empty. However, since the adjoining land in the same surveyed area has been handed over to be used as cemeteries by other faiths, there is confusion over the request placed by the masjid committee. Hence, there have been objections from religious organisations against providing this land to the masjid committee, alleging that certain plots of land would be reallocated to this committee.

In the same area, about 0.07 acre of land (Survey No. 251/1) has been allotted to Syrian Christians and about 0.10 acre (Survey No. 251/1) alloted to other Christians. In addition, about 2.32 acre (Survey No. 254/2) has been handed over as cremation ground for the Hindu community, about 0.59 acre (Survey No. 250/2A,B) for the Brahma Samaj community and about 2.28 acre (Survey No. 253/2) for the Christian community. About 0.83 acre (Survey No. 251/1) has been handed over to MESCOM.

‘Profit’ trap: Mangaluru trader duped of ₹33.1 lakh in online App scam

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.
