Mangaluru, Jan 18: A newborn female child was found dead in a well in the heart of the city, a few days after it was thrown into it by unknown miscreant.

The decayed dead body of the infant was retrieved from the well located in the property owned by Kasturi and Aithal, an elderly couple at Kalpana road near Bendorewell, in the city.

It is said that the couple, whose only daughter lives in another place, hardly uses water from this well. However, one of their neighbour, was often drawing water from the same well.

According to Kasturi, her neighbour had told her a couple of days ago that a nasty smell had been emanating from the well. On Sunday, they were shocked to see the dead body of a child floating in the well.

She informed the police, who rushed to the spot and retrieved the body and sent it for post mortem.

A case has been registered at Kadri Police Station. Police are trying to trace the culprits, who threw the bay into the well.
