Mangaluru, May 31: In a gut-wrenching tragedy, a five-and-half-year-old girl slipped to death from the eighth floor of a residential apartment at Shaktinagar on the outskirts of the city today.
The deceased has been identified as Shannel Janicia D'Souza, daughter of Wilson and Alithia D’Souza. The tragedy occurred when the girl was alone at home.
According to sources, the Anitha had gone out for some work as her daughter was fast asleep in the bedroom in their rented house on the eight floor of Classique Sapphire Apartments.
Even before the mother could return, the little girl woke up and climbed the balcony grills. As the balcony was not fully covered, she slipped and fell down.
The police said that the girl fell on the extended roof of second floor of the same apartment and suffered severe injuries on her head and chest. Though she was rushed to KMC hospital, the doctors could not save her life. Shannel’s father, who works in Sharjah is expected to come for the funeral rites.
Jurisdictional Kankanady Police have registered a case against flat owner Veena Saldanha and general power of attorney holder Valerian Monteiro for not putting up full-length grills on the balcony which resulted in the girl’s death.
