Mangaluru, Feb 10: Over 80 agitators, including Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, who on Friday launched a a symbolic hunger strike against the incumbent Congress government of the state for going ahead with the Yettinahole Diversion Project initiated by previous BJP government, were briefly detained by the police.

The protest was contrary to the announcement on February 6, when activists Satyajit Surathkal and M.G. Hegde said that they and Mr. Kateel and other activists of the Netravathi Rakshana Samyukta Samiti will begin an indefinite hunger strike on Friday.

They had said that members of other organisations will be on a relay hunger strike. On Friday morning, Mr. Kateel and other activists garlanded the statue of Mahatma Gandhi and sat on strike near the office of the Deputy Commissioner at 10 a.m.

Zilla Panchayat president Meenakshi Shanthigodu and vice-president Kasturi Panja, deputy mayor Sumitra Kariya, BJP district unit president Sanjeev Mathandoor, former MLC?Monappa Bhandary, former minister Krishna J?Palemar, former MLA?N?Yogish Bhat, Congress leader Harikrishna Bantwal and JD(S) leader Sundar Acharya were also among the agitators who courted arrested.

The jurisdictional Mangaluru south police had given permission for protest from 10 am to 2 pm on Friday. When there was no sign of the protesters calling it off even after 2.45 pm, the police had no option, but to arrest them. Though some among the agitators resisted, they were all packed off into waiting”police vans.

ACP (central sub-division) Udaya M Nayak said:?‘In all 83 protesters were arrested and let off. A case has been booked against them under section 71 of Karnataka Police Act.”?

Earlier, seer sri Charukeerti Bhattaraka of Jain Mutt, Moodbidri, Kemaru Mutt seer Sri Isha Vittala Dasa and Sri Gurudevananda of Odiyur mutt had one thing to say in common - to revoke the project, as it may affect drinking water supply in the region.

Seer Charukeerthi Bhattaraka explained that excess water is available in Dakshina Kannada district only between July and September. When this is the reality, it will be better to revoke the project to divert water from Netravathi, he said. The seer also clarified that they are not against providing drinking water to Kolar and Chikkaballapur districts (as the Yettinahole project is aimed at supply water to the two parched districts), but not without scientific study into the availability of water here.

Mr Kateel has warned of intensifying the anti-Yettinahole protest by calling for Dakshina Kannada bandh during the budget session of the state government. Kateel said: “A delegation will be taken to Governor Vajubhai R?Vala sooner to seek his intervention in the issue. A call wil be taken to decide over next course of action at the district-level, especially after we were forced to wind up the indefinite fast unto death protest call given on Friday.”

Seer Sri Rajashekharananda of Vajradehi Mutt, Gurupura, was also in the lead of the protest. Former MLA?K?Vijaykumar Shetty who had formed Netravathi Samyukta Rakshana Samiti, under the banner of which the fast was launched, cannot make it to the agitation due to ill health.

Mangaluru: The Mangaluru CEN police have arrested a 23-year-old man for allegedly posting provocative and misleading content on an Instagram page named “mr_a_titude”, targeting the Bajpe police.

Mangaluru Commissioner of Police Sudheer Kumar Reddy C H identified the arrested as Abhishek M, a resident of Katipalla in Mangaluru.

A case has been registered at the Bajpe Police Station under Sections 353(1)(c), 353(2), 56, and 57 read with Section 189 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in connection with the post.

According to police, the accused uploaded a photograph of a hotel on the Instagram page and alleged that accused persons in a murder case under the Bajpe police jurisdiction were being given “royal treatment” by the police, including being served beef meals daily from the hotel.

The post further accused the police of supporting criminals, misusing their authority, and betraying public trust. Police said the content was provocative in nature and aimed at inciting public outrage against the police.

Following the post, a case was registered at the Bajpe police station, and further investigation was transferred to the CEN police station.

Police records indicate that the accused has a criminal history, with multiple cases registered against him, including murder, attempt to murder, assault, and robbery at the Surathkal Police Station, and one case at the Kaup Police Station.

The Commissioner said the accused was traced and arrested using technical evidence.

Mangaluru, Dec 16: The Mangaluru City police have significantly escalated their campaign against drug trafficking, arresting 25 individuals and booking 12 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act between November 30 and December 13. The crackdown resulted in the seizure of a substantial quantity of illicit substances, including 685.6 grams of MDMA and 1.5 kg of ganja.

The success of this recent drive has been significantly boosted by the city’s innovative, QR code-based anonymous reporting system.

"The anonymous reporting system has received an encouraging response. Several recent arrests were made based on inputs received through this system, helping police tighten the noose around drug peddlers," said the City Police Commissioner.

The latest arrests contribute to a robust year-to-date record, underscoring the police's relentless commitment to combating the drug menace.

Up to December 14 this year, the police have registered a total of 107 cases of drug peddling, leading to the arrest of 219 peddlers. Furthermore, they have booked 562 cases of drug consumption, resulting in the arrest of 671 individuals.

The scale of the seizure for the year reflects the magnitude of the problem being tackled: police have seized 320.6 kg of ganja worth ₹88.7 lakh and 1.4 kg of MDMA valued at ₹1.2 crore. Other significant seizures include hydro-weed ganja worth ₹94.7 lakh and cocaine worth ₹1.9 lakh, among others.

The Commissioner emphasized a policy of rigorous enforcement: "We ensure that peddlers are caught red-handed so that they cannot later dispute the case or claim innocence."

To counter the rising trend of substance abuse among youth, the Mangaluru City police have rolled out uniform guidelines for random drug testing across educational institutions.

As part of the drive, tests were conducted in approximately 100 institutions, screening an estimated 5,500 to 6,000 students in the first phase. 20 students tested positive for drug consumption during the initial screening.

Students who tested positive have been provided counselling and are scheduled for re-testing in the second quarter. The testing will also be expanded to students not covered in the first phase. In a move to ensure strict implementation, police personnel were deployed in mufti in some institutions. Reiterating a zero-tolerance stance, the Commissioner confirmed that random testing will continue, and colleges have also been instructed to conduct drug tests at the time of admission to deter substance abuse from an early stage.

Mangaluru: In a decisive move to tackle the city’s deteriorating sanitation infrastructure, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has announced a massive ₹1,200 crore action plan to overhaul its underground drainage (UGD) network.

The initiative, spearheaded by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV, aims to bridge "missing links" in the current system that have left residents grappling with overflowing sewage and environmental hazards.

The Breaking Point

The announcement follows a high-intensity phone-in session on Thursday, where the DC was flooded with grievances from frustrated citizens. Residents, including Savithri from Yekkur, described a harrowing reality: raw sewage from apartments leaking into stormwater drains, creating a "permanent stink" and turning residential zones into mosquito breeding grounds.

"We are facing immense difficulties due to the stench and the health risks. Local officials have remained silent until now," one resident reported during the session.

The Strategy: A Six-Year Vision

DC Darshan HV confirmed that the proposed plan is not a temporary patch but a comprehensive six-year roadmap designed to accommodate Mangaluru’s projected population growth. Key highlights of the plan include:

•    Infrastructure Expansion: Laying additional pipelines to connect older neighborhoods to the main grid.

•    STP Crackdown: Stricter enforcement of Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) regulations. While new apartments are required to have functional STPs, many older buildings lack them entirely, and several newer units are reportedly non-functional.

•    Budgetary Push: The plan has already been discussed with the district in-charge minister and the Secretary of the Urban Development Department. It is slated for formal presentation in the upcoming state budget.
