Mangaluru, Aug 4: A passenger, who arrived from Dubai was arrested after customs officials at Mangaluru International Airport found around 1.5 kg of gold worth Rs 45 lakh concealed inside four emergency lanterns he was carrying.
According to sources, the passenger, a 30-year-old man hailing from Kasaragod, arrived in an Air India Express flight about 5am. Customs officials who were on duty grew suspicious as to why the passenger was carrying four emergency lights.
Upon thorough checking of the goods he was carrying, officials found gold concealed inside the emergency lights. The passenger was arrested and the gold was seized.
From January 1 to June 31, this year, he customs officials have seized contraband gold weighing 22.97 kg, valued at Rs 7.06 crore.
