Mangaluru police to strengthen social media monitoring cell

Mangaluru, Feb 1: Underscoring the need to regulate social media content which has a potential to create communal tension in the city, Police Commissioner T R Suresh today said that efforts are being made to strengthen the city police’s social media monitoring cell and catch the accused.

In his interaction during the ‘meet the press’ programme here at Press Club, he urged the people not to spread rumours and hate messages on social media.

He said the stretch between Hampankatta and Clock Tower Circle, and between KMC Hospital Attavar and Bishop Victor Cross Road will be developed as no-honking zones.

Mr. Suresh said a notification for declaring the stretch between Hampankatta and Clock Tower Circle as a no-honking zone was issued in 1993.

Similarly, the notification regarding KMC Hospital and Bishop Victor Cross Road was issued in 2000.

Mr. Suresh said that awareness activities about these two zones will be part of the road safety week programme that will start on Sunday. “We will then start enforcing the rule. Violators will be booked under the Indian Penal Code for violating orders that are promulgated,” Mr. Suresh said.

The police are studying other potential areas that need to be declared as no-honking zones, he added.

As per directions from the Union government, Mr. Suresh said the city police has opened a ‘one-stop centre’ at the Women’s Police Station for cases of harassment to women. The women will get all assistance, including medical and legal, at the centre.

Mr. Suresh said the city police have proposed to have a new building for the centre, which will also have a facility for the victims to stay.

On action against illegal sand extraction, Mr. Suresh said that 90% of cases are being booked at the instance of the police.

Under the Mines and Minerals (Regulation and Development) Act, the police are not empowered to register a First Information Report directly and it has to be done by the Department of Mines and Geology. The Department was taking time in registering FIR following raids by police, he said.

Melkar (Bantwal): The 9th Annual Day celebration of SMR Public School, titled “EXCELLENTIA”, was held on December 15 with great enthusiasm and dignity, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s journey towards academic excellence and holistic development.

The programme was inaugurated by Dr. U. T. Iftikar Ali. The chief guests were Dr. Akhtar Hussain, Mr. P. Moosabba Beary, Mr. Zakaria Jokattre, and Dr. T. M. Abdul Rahuf—whose inspiring addresses motivated the students and appreciated the school’s contributions to education.

Mr. Abdul Nasir, Mr. Ibrahim Gadiyar, Mr. Razak Golthamajal, Mr. Sali Koya, Mr. Arshad Hussain, Mr. Ismail Balanoor, Mr. Feroz Bawa, Mr. Sahul Hameed, Mr. Abubakkar, Mr. Hameed K. Mani, Mr. Abdul Majeed (Principal, Melkar Women’s College), and Mr. Abdul Lathief (Former Principal, Melkar Women’s College) were the guests of honour.

The Annual Report was presented by the Headmistress, Ms. Fathimathul Zaheera, highlighting the school’s achievements and progress during the academic year. The Presidential Address was delivered by the Chairman of SMR Public School, Dr. Haji S. M. Rasheed, who emphasised the vital role of education in shaping students’ futures and stressed the importance of discipline, dedication, and consistent effort in achieving 100 per cent academic results.

Secretary of SMR Public School, Mr. Rifath Ahmed, and PTA President, Mr. Sandeep Kumar, were also present on the occasion.

The Annual Day celebration showcased the collective efforts of students and teachers and reaffirmed the school’s commitment to quality education and all-round development. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all dignitaries, parents, and well-wishers for their support.
