Mangaluru, Apr 15: A small group of human rights activists and rationalists of Mangaluru have slammed the “silence” of political parties and other groups over the murder of 51-year-old Right to Information activist Vinayak Panduranga Baliga, who was hacked to death on March 21.

They staged a protest under the aegis of Deshapremi Sanghatanegala Okkoota on Friday in the city and demanded proper investigation into Baliga murder case and payment of compensation to the family members.

Addressing the protesters, rationalist Narendra Nayak said that while political parties organise demonstrations for cattle theft and immoral policing incidents, there has been no protests condemning the murder of Vinayak Baliga.

District in-charge Minister B. Ramanath Rai, Minister of State for Youth Empowerment K. Abhayachandra Jain and the two MLAs, J.R. Lobo and Mohiuddin Bava, have not spoken a word against the crime. Mr. Nayak said that senior Congress Leader B. Janardhana Poojary too was silent in the matter.

Mr. Nayak said that Vinayak Baliga had filed applications questioning several illegal constructions in the city. He had also questioned the affairs of Venkataramana Temple.

“The perpetrators might think that the murder of Vinayk Baliga will make infructuous the legal fight started by Vinayak Baliga. We will not allow this to happen. We will ensure that the legal fight reaches its logical conclusion,” Mr. Nayak said.

Mr. Nayak said that they were with Police Commissioner M. Chandra Sekhar and his team of officers who are making efforts to go deep into the murder and arrest those involved in it.

Councillor Dayanand Shetty said that it was sad that Bharatiya Janata Party and MP Nalin Kumar Kateel was not speaking out against the murder of Vinayak Baliga, who was an active party worker. He sought compensation of Rs. 25 lakh compensation to Vinayak Baliga's family.

All India Congress Committee member P.V. Mohan, activist Suresh Shetty and Democratic Youth Federation of India's activist Santosh Bajal participated in the demonstration.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has issued a high-alert warning to vehicle owners regarding a surge in cyber fraud targeting those looking to pay traffic violation fines. Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

•    Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

•    Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

•    Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.
