Mangaluru, Jul 29: City based KMC Hospital, part of Manipal Health Enterprises, completed a rare and complicated surgery called Right Hemihepatectomy (Removal of the right half of the liver). Reputed to have one of the best oncology departments in the region this supreme medical challenge was met with finesse and perfection under the leadership of Dr. Sathya Narayan, Gastrointestinal & Hepatobiliary Surgeon, KMC Hospital and the life of a 38 year old man was saved.

Sudhir Shetty, (name changed), 38, from Mangaluru was diagnosed to have a large tumor in the right lobe of liver. On investigation it was proved to be Hepatocellular Carcinoma – a type of cancer of liver measuring about 13x10cms in size. The only way to cure his problem was to remove the entire right half of liver (right lobe) with the tumor.

After initial assessment of his health condition and contemplating all the medical possibilities it was decided that Right Hemihepatectomy (right Liver resection) – which has been rarely ever performed in Mangalore was only way out.

Liver resection is a process where surgically a part of it has to be removed and is not a very common phenomenon in Mangalore. A team of doctors headed by gastrointestinal & hepatobiliary surgeon Dr Sathya Narayan performed the surgery and successfully removed the tumor. Patient recuperated from the procedure fast and was eventually discharged after 8 days.

“Major liver resections are the only ray of hope or solution for patients with liver tumor. Early surgery performed by expert team of surgeons can cure this problem. Due to the expert team available at KMC Hospital Mangalore liver resections are increasingly being performed routinely with excellent results. This is also owed to the right mix of medical practitioners and high end technologies,” said Dr. Sathya Narayan, Gastrointestinal & Hepatobiliary Surgeon, KMC Hospital.
