Mangaluru, Sep 4: Around 200 students staged a 'rasta roko' programme under the banner of All College Students' Association (ACSA), Dakshina Kannada in front of the University College at Hampankatta here on Friday, demanding that the Yettinahole project should be scrapped by the state government.
The 'rasta roko' was staged for about half an hour in protest of the unsystematic implementation of the project by the state government and involvement of concerned elected representatives.
Addressing the students, legal advisor of ACSA Dinakar Shetty said that there would be harder days to come for people in Dakshina Kannada if the implementation of the disastrous Yettinahole project was allowed to be completed. The Yettinahole project was given the cabinet approval when D V Sadananda Gowda was the chief minister of Karnataka.
Although both Sadananda Gowda and former union minister Veerappa Moily became elected representatives with the votes of citizens, they have failed to safeguard the interests of the people. If the implementation of this project is allowed to continue, people will encounter severe water shortage in Dakshina Kannada in the coming days, he warned, adding that people should become aware of this.
Criticising Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, he said that the CM was meting injustice to the people of Dakshina Kannada by taking away their main source of drinking water. The CM and local elected representatives should take action in favour of the people and immediately scrap the project, he urged.
Speaking on the occasion, president of the association Rohini said that the local elected representatives should resign if they were unable to serve the interests of people in Dakshina Kannada.
She also urged legal action to recover assets from the local elected representatives and concerned officials responsible for the implementation of the project and urged all associations in the district to express their opposition to the project.
