Mangaluru: Top cop warns NRIs against spreading ‘misleading’ and ‘inciting’ messages over CAA

Mangaluru, Dec 18: Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Dr P S Harsha has issued a stern warning to people, including non-resident Indians, against spreading misleading and inciting messages over Citizenship Amendment Act-2019 (CAA) on social media platforms.

Addressing a press meet at his office in the city today he said: “We have noticed that some people sitting in other countries are misleading and provoking people over CAA through WhatsApp and other social media platforms. We will take stern action against them.”

Justifying the police action during the road block staged by the activists of Campus Front of India (CFI) in the city on December 16, the top cop said that those who stage protests without obtaining permission will be dealt with in the same way.

“We had received applications from six or seven organisations and we have given them permission to hold the peaceful protests. But those who stage protests without permission, disrupt peace and damage public property will definitely face police action,” he said.

“For past few days, messages are doing rounds on social media about huge protests against CAA in Mangaluru on December 20 and 23. No organisation has so far sought permission for such a protest. Hence, spreading such messages will be considered as a crime,” he warned.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has issued a high-alert warning to vehicle owners regarding a surge in cyber fraud targeting those looking to pay traffic violation fines. Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

• Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

• Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

• Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.
