Mangaluru, Nov 25: Two retired police officers from Manglauru are among the 47 fortunate IPS officers from Karnataka who will receive the President's Medal on November 26 at at the Raj Bhavan in Bengaluru.

Vishwanath Pandith, the former Deputy Superintendent of Police, Excise and Lottery Prohibition Wing (Mangaluru) has won the Distinguished Service Medal (Republic Day) for his service in the police department. P Harishchandra, former Deputy Superintendent of Police (West Zone, Mangaluru) has won the Distinguished Service Medal (Independence Day) among other IPS officers.
Ironically both the retired IPS officers are facing criminal cases. The Dakshina Kannada district unit of Peoples Union For Civil Liberties (PUCL), in a release issued here on Tuesday said that the decision to present the duo with president's medal is shocking.
“We are surprised to learn that the above mentioned officers are awarded President's Medal for their services. We would however like to point out that both these officers have criminal cases pending against them. Against Harishchandra CC. No. 2553/07 is pending in 2nd JMFC Court Mangaluru and against Vishwanath Criminal Case No. 8/10 is Pending in 3rdCJM Court, Mangaluru.
David D'Souza, the president of DK district unit of PUCL has written to Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Rudabhai Vala and Director General & Inspector General of Police Lalrokhuma Pachuau urging them to withdraw the award.
