Mangaluru, Jan 29: President of Dakshina Kannada district unit of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) Jagadish Shenava said that the organisation will organise a Bruhat Hindu Samajothsava on March 1 in Mangaluru as part of its silver jubilee celebrations.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, he said that the Samajothsava, which would be presided by Congressman Vijaynath Vittal Shetty, would begin with a mass procession from Ambedkar Circle to Nehru Maidan, which will begin at 2.30 p.m. on March 1. Sadhwi Balika Saraswati Mishra from Madhya Pradesh will deliver the keynote address and other prominent Hindutva leaders will speak during the event, he said, adding that several saints, Hindutva leaders and heads of mutts would participate in the event.

He said that a working committee had been formed for the Samajothsava, and founder-chairman of Karavali Group of Colleges Ganesh Rao had been selected as the honorary president of the committee. Vijaynath Vittal Shetty was selected as the president, Jagadeep Suvarna as the working president and Jitendra Kottary as the general secretary of the committee. Over 1 lakh people from Mangaluru taluk are expected to take part in the event, he said.

Speaking on the occasion, VHP leader M B Puranik said that the Samajothsava was organised to promote unity and culture among the Hindus and the intention was not to hurt sentiments of another community.

When asked about the provocative speeches at the recent Hindutva convention held in Puttur which instigated common people to spark communal clashes in the region, he said that the speakers invited for the Samajothsava would be told to stick to the framework provided. However, we cannot put any restrictions on what they speak and we are helpless if they go beyond their limits, he told media persons.

Ganesh Rao assured that the organisers would strictly work within the legal and constitutional framework.

Vijaynath Vittal Shetty, Jagadeep Suvarna, Jitendra Kottary and others were present.
