Mangaluru, Dec 19: Underworld operative Vikki Shetty’s aide Sharan Akashbhavan has been acquitted by a city special court for sexual assault of raping and robbing a 52-year-old woman near Deralakatte, here.

According to the chargesheet filed by the Mangaluru Rural police, the victim was waiting at Yekkur bus stop for a bus to Manjeshwar in Kerala on the night of March 9, 2008.
Sharan was returning after attending a ritual at a temple nearby in a motorcycle. As he saw the woman, he reportedly asked pillion rider to get off his motorcycle and told the woman that he would drop her to the place the bus will be available and asked her get on to his motorcycle.
The woman was taken to a secluded place where he allegedly raped her. He took away gold ornaments she was carrying and sold it to a jeweller. The victim, who had then performed marriage of her daughter, did not file the complaint immediately. She filed complaint 10 days after the incident.
The police arrested Sharan in 2012 for his alleged involvement in the murder of Ramakrishna AS, Administrator of KVG College Sullia. He was reported to be at large following bail in October 2012. He was again arrested in August 26, 2014.
Among the witnesses examined by prosecutor Judith O.M. Crasta included the victim, who narrated about the alleged sexual assault by Sharan before the court. The doctor, who has examined the victim, had deposed that the woman had been sexually assaulted by Sharan.
