Mangaluru, Mar 11: A middle aged woman from this coastal city who had allegedly impersonated inspector general of police (home guards) D Roopa and directed a cop to book a hotel room in her name a few months ago, was arrested by Bengaluru police and later released.
The accused has been identified as Asha Prakash (45), a resident of a private apartment complex in Pandeshwara, Mangaluru. She had worked with the postal department before taking voluntary retirement last year.
In December 2018, a woman had called a senior police officer in Lucknow saying, "I'm IPS officer Roopa calling. Please book a hotel room between December 29 and January 3."
The officer, after doing the needful, had called Roopa saying the room had been booked. Following this, Roopa had filed the complaint with Banashankari police.
Tracing the mobile number from which the call was made, police tracked down Asha Prakash. However, she pleaded innocence, saying her mobile was lost a month ago. "I lost my cellphone and have lodged a complaint with Pandeshwara police," she told police.
Asha also produced a copy of the acknowledgement given by police after filing the complaint.
"Asha had taken a duplicate sim card. But investigation revealed that the IME number of the device from which the accused had called and the one used by Asha was the same. After we told her about the IME number, she confessed to the crime, but did not reveal the motive. Since it was a non-heinous crime, she was released on bail immediately," said police.
