Mangaluru: Youth encouraged to observe and promote road safety

Mangaluru, Jan 28: With assurances and instructions to observe traffic and safety rules round the year, the 26th National Road Safety Week came to a close at a programme organised by Dakshina Kannada district administration, traffic department and police department here on Wednesday.

Speaking at the valedictory programme, Superintendent of Police S D Sharanappa encouraged people, especially the youth, to safeguard their lives by following road safety rules while driving on the roads to avoid accidents. Following road safety rules is mandatory for drivers and also for pedestrians. The coastal region of Mangaluru is known for being ahead in all positive aspects, and does not lag behind in following proper traffic rules. Majority of the people including the youth in the district follow traffic rules and only those who do not follow the relevant rules cause accidents, he said.

He said that the district police department had identified accident-prone zones in the past year and had surveyed these spots to scientifically improve the safe passage of vehicular traffic. The department also acquired equipment worth Rs 10 lakh such as traffic signals, traffic lights, reflectors and sign boards to control and prevent road accidents, he said, placing a request to the Mayor to implement CCTV cameras and more number of traffic signals and road signs in city limits to further help in the smooth flow of vehicular traffic in Mangaluru.

Speaking on the occasion, Dakshina Kannada Bus Owners Association Nelson Pereira said that people should help and cooperate in following traffic and road safety rules to avoid untoward incidents and mishaps involving deaths of travellers.

In his introductory remarks, Assistant Regional Transport Officer G S Hegde said that several programmes such as training to city bus drivers, awareness rally, cartoon exhibition, bike rally, mime shows, skits and street plays had been held in Mangaluru as part of the road safety week to promote road safety among citizens and commuters in the city.

Prizes were distributed to winners of painting competitions held for high school students in Bantwal and Mangaluru as part of the initiative.

Mayor of Mangaluru City Corporation Mahabala Marla presided over the programme. DCP (Law & Order) Santhosh Babu, DCP (Crime & Traffic) Vishnuvardhan N, RTO Afzal Ahmed Khan and others were present.

Melkar, Dec 17: The 17th Annual Day and Graduation Ceremony of Melkar Women’s PU and Degree College, themed “Fusion-2K25,” was celebrated with dignity and enthusiasm, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s academic journey. The programme reflected the college’s steadfast commitment to academic excellence, character building, and the holistic development of students.

The event was inaugurated by Mr. Asif Mohammed, whose presence greatly enriched the occasion. The celebration was further graced by the chief guests Mr. P. B. Ahmed Mudassir and Mr. Nissar Fakeer Mohammed, along with the distinguished guests of honour Mr. B. A. Nazeer and Mr. Ibrahim Gadiyar. Cultural programmes and academic recognitions formed an integral part of the celebration, showcasing the talents and achievements of the students. The graduation ceremony was a proud moment for the outgoing students as they were formally conferred degrees and wished success in their future endeavours.

Ms. Mashmooma Fathima served as the Master of Ceremonies. The welcome address was delivered by Ms. Fathima Nida, and the programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Ms. Ayisha Suhana.

The event successfully achieved its objectives and was highly appreciated by the guests and attendees.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: The Mangaluru City Police have issued a detailed traffic advisory ahead of the inaugural ceremony of Karavali Utsava, which will be held at the Karavali Utsava Ground on Saturday.

The festival will be inaugurated at 6:00 pm by Dakshina Kannada District Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao. Cultural and public programmes will be held at the venue every evening and will continue until January 2.

According to City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy, parking of vehicles is strictly prohibited on both sides of the road from Lalbagh to Karavali Utsava Ground. Visitors are requested to park their vehicles only at designated parking areas.

To help the public, traffic signboards and parking guidance flex boards have been installed along the routes leading to the venue. The police have urged commuters and visitors to follow these instructions to ensure smooth traffic movement.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.
