Mangaluru, Sep 16: Nearly three years after an 11-year-old girl was abducted and raped in Sullia in Dakshina Kannada, a district court has sentenced him to three year imprisonment.

The judge also directed the accused to pay a fine of Rs 5,000 or undergo three months imprisonment.
According to the charge sheet, the girl was playing with her friends near the house after returning from school. Her mother asked her to bring salt from a nearby grocery shop. While she was returning from the shop, Naveen and his teenage friend forcibly took her to an arecanut plantation and sexually assaulted her.
Police arrested Naveen on a complaint from the girl and filed the charge sheet. Naveen was charged under Section 8 of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act and other relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.
A case booked against the co-accused was referred to the Juvenile Justice Board as he was minor.
The court directed the Dakshina Kannada District Legal Services Authority to pay co mpensation to the victim. Special senior PP C Venkataramana Swamy examined as many as 19 witnesses including the victim, who told the court about the sexual assault on her.
