Manjeshwar, Aug 30: Students and the Parent-Teacher Association of Government Higher Secondary School, Mangalpady, near Manjeshwar, finally heaved a sigh of relief after a non-Kannada mathematics teacher opted to go on leave from Wednesday following resentment over his posting to the school.
Appointment of the teacher from Malappuram as High School Assistant (Mathematics-Kannada) on July 23 as per the list furnished by the Kerala State Public Service Commission had invited the wrath of the PTA after it was found that he was not conversant in the language.
Though the students and their parents staged a protest in front of the Deputy Director of Education office here on August 3 seeking immediate resolution of the imbroglio, the teacher refused to go on leave.
The Headmistress, who took up the issue with the Higher Education Department, said that the Kannada medium students were put to great difficulty as the teacher lacked basic knowledge of Kannada.
On Wednesday, when the school reopened after the Onam recess, the teacher sought four months’ leave, the Headmistress said. “We have asked the district panchayat and Education Department to give consent to appoint a Mathematics teacher who is conversant in Kannada on daily wages till alternative arrangements are made,” she said. The local body has promised to address the issue without delay.
