Mangalore, Jul 25: Home Minister K J George said that plans were on the anvil to set up a prison with maximum security in Mangalore soon.
Replying to a query by MLC Ivan D'Souza in the Legislative Council on Thursday, he said that a plot of 100-acre land in Kurnadu and Cheloor villages in Bantwal taluk had been identified for the project.

He informed that close to 64 acres had been acquired by the revenue department for the purpose, and efforts were being made to acquire additional 41 acres of land through Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board.
200-inmate capacity prison holds 373 prisoners
The central prison that exists in Mangalore has a capacity of holding 200 inmates, but currently the prison houses 373 inmates, out of which 361 are male and 12 are female, said the home minister.
He further said that the old building of the prison would be renovated to house notorious criminals. He said that the three incidents of clashes among inmates in the prison premises had been taken cognizance of and cases had been registered.
