Mangaluru, Mar 24: The Mangaluru City Corporation’s budget for the fiscal year 2015-16 was presented on Tuesday without much fanfare.

Councillor and chairman of the Finance Standing Committee Harinath presented the budget at the Mangala Auditorium in the city corporation building here on Tuesday, proposing an estimate income of Rs 358.44 crore and expenditure of Rs 358.42 crore with a surplus of Rs 1.5 lakhs.

The biggest allotment of Rs 159.86 crore had been made for developmental works in the city including welfare programmes under various schemes, while another Rs 45.21 crore has been allotted for repairs and maintenance works. A sum of Rs 20 crore has been allotted for solid-waste management and Rs 2 crore for security personnel expenses.

Following the presentation of the budget in the presence of newly-elected Mayor Jacintha Vijay Alfred, the Opposition councillors criticised the budget for non-inclusion of new developmental projects for the next fiscal year.

Councillor Sudheer Shetty from BJP said that no special grant had been sanctioned for Mangaluru City Corporation in the recent state budget. No new developmental projects have been proposed for the city in this budget. If the city corporation shows no progress in developmental activities, no grants will be sanctioned to MCC, he said, adding that the budget proposed was unsatisfactory.

In addition, he said that only 54 percent of the water tax had been collected in the previous fiscal year. Of the expected Rs 36 crores from water tax, only Rs 19.67 crore had been collected till December. With regard to the property tax, only 85 percent of the expected sum had been collected from taxpayers, he pointed out.

Alleging that the ruling party was showing negligence over developmental projects in the city, he said that no funds had been allotted in the proposed budget for the new bus stand in the city.

Another councillor Tilakraj from BJP said that the promises made by the ruling party in their manifesto had been forgotten after they assumed power in the city corporation.

He pointed out that for prevention of malaria, only a sum of Rs 9 lakhs had been utilised while a total of Rs 75 lakhs had been earmarked in the previous budget.

Criticising the budget, councillor Roopa Bangera pointed that there was no mention of ‘Kuteera Jyothi’ scheme in the proposed budget for the year 2015-16.

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

•    Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

•    State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

•    Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.
