Malappuram, Jul 25: Tens of thousands of Sunni believers attended a mammoth prayer congregation at Swalat Nagar near here on Thursday evening anticipating Lailathul Qadr, the night that is believed by Muslims to be holier than 1,000 months.

The sprawling grounds of Swalat Nagar at Muttippaditurned into a sea of humanity as thousands of Sunni believers converged there.

The mega prayer congregation took a pledge against terrorism and welcomed the United Nations Human Rights Council resolution to launch an investigation into the Israeli offensive on Gaza. They prayed for global peace and expressed solidarity with the people of Palestine.

All India Sunni Jamiyyathul Ulama general secretary Kanthapuram A P Aboobacker Musliar inaugurated the meet. Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama treasurer Sayed Ali Bafaqi Thangal presided.

Delivering the keynote address, Madin chairman Sayed Ibrahim Khaleel Bukhari called upon the people to strengthen their inner life. “God has given man the power and insight to choose his course of life. God has also given man the attribute of knowledge in an abstract form. This is the divine trust that man has assumed. We have to fortify this trust and work for humanity. Ramzan is the best time to strengthen the inner beauty of human life,” he said.

Mr Bukhari led various prayers such as Thouba, Tahleel, Swalat and Qat'mul Qur'an.

The programme began with an Ihthikaf session in the morning, followed by several sessions on Quran and Hadith. A mass Iftar was held at the grounds. Hundreds of believers attended the obligatory prayers of Magrib and Isha, followed by Tharaveeh, Avvabeen, Vitr and other prayers.

Elaborate arrangements were made for the prayer meet. Traffic along the route was diverted.

Several delegates from countries such as Australia, the U.K., Hong Kong, and Malaysia, and from the Gulf attended the meeting.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has issued a high-alert warning to vehicle owners regarding a surge in cyber fraud targeting those looking to pay traffic violation fines. Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

•    Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

•    Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

•    Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.

SHRIMP.jpg

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.
