Udupi, Jul 11: Rubbishing the reports of mild earthquake in Udupi and Kodagu districts, an official has said that no seismic activity has been recorded in the region.
Gangaram Baderia, Principal Secretary to Revenue Department, yesterday today clarified that micro tremors in parts of Udupi and Somvarpet taluk of Kodagu district were mere rain related incidents.
“Geology of Udupi is Granitic gneisses with Laterite capping of approximately 18-25 m. This laterite capping has a property of leaching and dissolving during heavy rain. Such rainwater which percolates through the laterite surface dissolves laterite beneath and creates hallow structures further leading to the formation of caves,” he stated.
Baderia said that because of the lack of support roof, such caves collapse to form local sink holes. This formation of sink holes leads to generation of minor ground vibration, which is associated with hallow sound at shallow depths.
He further said that “the aforementioned phenomenon is also attributed for mild shaking as perceived by the public in Somvarpet taluk of Kodagu. This usually happens when a region is exposed to continuous high intensity rainfall, which Udupi and Kodagu districts are experiencing.”
He said that no seismic signature has been captured in the broadband seismometer installed by the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre.
