Mild communal tension in Bantwal after gang attacks man for talking to burqa-clad woman

Bantwal, Jul 29: A gang of men belonging to a particular community thrashed a man belonging to another community following an argument at Farangipete in Bantwal taluk of Dakshina Kannada today.

The alleged attack sparked a mild communal tension in the area. The police have stepped up security measures to prevent recurrence of untoward incidents.

Suresh, a resident of Kota in Udupi district has been admitted to the government hospital in Puttur following the alleged attack. According to him, the gang attacked him just because he was talking to a burqa-clad woman at Farangipete. 

The police said, around 3 pm, the gang saw Suresh talking to a burqa-clad woman near the Farangipete bus stand and took offence to it. 

They said Suresh, who was en-route to Mangaluru after visiting Bantwal, bumped into the woman he was acquainted with. Hence, he stopped by and struck a conversation with her.

After the chat, as turned on the car and moved ahead, but the gang waylaid him and launched an attack in addition to hurling abuses for talking to the woman.

Police from Bantwal Rural station have recorded the statement of Suresh and registered a case under IPC Sections 144, 323, 504 r/w 149.

Police said that they had definite information on the identity of the accused and they would be apprehended soon.

Udupi, Dec 15: What was meant to be a post-pilgrimage gathering turned tragic in Padukere village of Brahmavar taluk, Udupi district, late Sunday night, when a clash among youths escalated into a fatal assault, leaving one man dead.

The victim has been identified as 30-year-old Santosh Mogaveera, a resident of Padukere.

According to preliminary information, the incident took place during a late-night drinking party involving a group of local youths who had recently returned after completing their pilgrimage to the Sabarimala shrine. An argument reportedly broke out among the group and soon escalated into a violent confrontation.

During the ensuing brawl, Santosh Mogaveera was allegedly assaulted and collapsed at the spot after sustaining serious injuries. He was rushed by local residents to a private hospital in Brahmavar, where doctors declared him dead.

On receiving information, senior police officials, including Brahmavar Circle Inspector Gopikrishna, Kota Police Sub-Inspector Praveen Kumar T, Station ASI Manthesh Jabagoudar, and head constables Pradeep and Ashok, visited the spot and conducted an inspection.

Police have taken four youths into custody in connection with the incident. A case has been registered at the Kota police station, and further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact sequence of events leading to the death.
