Thanking the CM for making him a minister “in recognition of service” and giving him an opportunity to “serve people more”, the Mogaveera stalwart said that he would give his best to keep the confidence the party high command and the chief minister.

He is yet to get a particular portfolio. Madhwaraj said the chief minister has to decide about it. He said he will chalk out plans for development after the allocation of the portfolio.

Madhwaraj said he will try to develop the district in all possible ways. He declined to comment about the district in-charge responsibility and added that he is unaware whether he will be given that responsibility.

He said he was clueless till the last minute though he aware of the rumors that he will be inducted into the Cabinet. “This development has come as a surprise to me,” he added.

He said he will bring in positive changes towards the all-round development of the district. “I will do justice to the portfolio being assigned to me. I will utilize the unique opportunity to lay strong foundation for the party in the district,” he said.

“I will take all the party members into confidence and work for the party's growth in the district. There are no differences within the party over the change in the ministerial candidate in the district. It is all up to the party high command and all the members should accept the party's decision irrespective of personal aspirations. The party stands united and there is no confusion within the party as stated in the media,” he added.

Madhwaraj, who is actively involved in Congress from the past 25 years, has won the Assembly election with more than 40,000 vote margin. In November 2015 he was appointed as parliamentary secretary for revenue minister.

He has served as secretary of Karnataka Pradesh Youth Congress. He regularly holds meetings with officials, besides paying surprise visits to all government offices to monitor the progress in development works. He has ensured that 10,000 BPL ration cards are distributed in his constituency. He has also worked to ensure electrification for 850 BPL houses under Rajiv Gandhi Rural Electrification Project.

Mangaluru: In a decisive move to tackle the city’s deteriorating sanitation infrastructure, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has announced a massive ₹1,200 crore action plan to overhaul its underground drainage (UGD) network.

The initiative, spearheaded by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV, aims to bridge "missing links" in the current system that have left residents grappling with overflowing sewage and environmental hazards.

The Breaking Point

The announcement follows a high-intensity phone-in session on Thursday, where the DC was flooded with grievances from frustrated citizens. Residents, including Savithri from Yekkur, described a harrowing reality: raw sewage from apartments leaking into stormwater drains, creating a "permanent stink" and turning residential zones into mosquito breeding grounds.

"We are facing immense difficulties due to the stench and the health risks. Local officials have remained silent until now," one resident reported during the session.

The Strategy: A Six-Year Vision

DC Darshan HV confirmed that the proposed plan is not a temporary patch but a comprehensive six-year roadmap designed to accommodate Mangaluru’s projected population growth. Key highlights of the plan include:

•    Infrastructure Expansion: Laying additional pipelines to connect older neighborhoods to the main grid.

•    STP Crackdown: Stricter enforcement of Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) regulations. While new apartments are required to have functional STPs, many older buildings lack them entirely, and several newer units are reportedly non-functional.

•    Budgetary Push: The plan has already been discussed with the district in-charge minister and the Secretary of the Urban Development Department. It is slated for formal presentation in the upcoming state budget.
