Minister sets three month deadline for pending works

Mangaluru, Nov 22: Expressing severe dissatisfaction over tardy progress in implementing various approved works under the special area development grants of elected representatives, S R Patil, the Minister for Information Technology and Biotechnology set a 90-day deadline for the officials in Dakshina Kannada to accomplish all pending works.

Presiding over a special review meeting of the progress made under local area development funds of MPs, MLAs and MLCs at Circuit House here in the city on Saturday, the minister said “the countdown begins today”.

Taking Mangalore City Corporation authorities to task for failing to implement works allocated to them the minister pointed out that the pendency had built up from 2010-11 up to last fiscal and this was causing severe consternation to elected representatives.

He noted that as many as 369 works were pending under special funds of legislators accounting for 75 per cent of the works sanctioned and 153 projects were pending under MP's funds.

G V Rajashekar, executive engineer, Mangalore City Corporation, meanwhile assured the minster that all the pending works would be completed within the deadline fixed by the latter. However, a visibly unsatisfied reminded the official that his jurisdiction is lot smaller compared to ZP engineering division that had to look after works in the entire district. "It is such lethargy that erodes people's faith in the elected representatives and you must regain their trust," Mr Patil said.

Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim meanwhile suggested the minister to consider re-appropriating funds to the government treasury of such works that are delayed beyond a point. Mr Patil, however, diplomatically brushed aside this suggestion.

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

• Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

• State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

• Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.
