Mangaluru, Dec 29: A policeman has been accused of assaulting the relatives of an accused after scuffle erupted between then in a village in Belthangady taluk.
A team of Belthangady police, led by Sub-Inspector of Police Sandesh Kumar, on Tuesday went to the house of Walter Kiran Saldanha, who has been accused of cheating Anil Furthado by taking money and not arranging for a visa to travel to Israel.
The police said that there was resistance from the family members when they tried to arrest Walter Saldahna. This was followed by a scuffle between the policemen and the relatives of Water Saldahna.
Apart from arresting Walter Saldahna, the police arrested three members of his family for obstructing them from discharging their duty.
Meanwhile, Jennifer Saldanha, wife of Walter Saldahna, accused the Sub-Inspector of Police and three policemen of behaving with them in rude manner. She has also accused the policemen of assaulting her and her other family members.
Ms. Saldanha, who is a school teacher, told reporters that she and other family members had returned home after finishing ceremonies related to the marriage of Walter Saldahna’s younger brother Alwyn Saldanha. Mr. Sandesh Kumar and three other policemen came to their house on Monday evening, she said. They surrounded Walter Saldahna and took him into their custody. When she questioned their action, Ms. Saldanha was pushed aside, she said and added that the policemen also hurled abuses at her. “Sister Winne and a few other relatives, who came to our rescue, were assaulted,” she said.
Ms. Saldanha alleged that the police took away seven mobile phones that were used by the family members to record the incident. They forcibly took with them Walter Saldahna and three others in a police van, she said.
Ms. Saldanha and her three relatives received treatment at the Wenlock Hospital and then lodged a complaint against Mr. Sandesh Kumar.
Mangaluru South MLA J.R. Lobo met Ms. Saldanha and her relatives in the hospital. Superintendent of Police Sharanappa S.D. said that an inquiry has been ordered into the allegations made by Ms. Saldanha.
However, the Sub-Inspector of Police denied the charge that he and his staff assaulted the school teacher.
