Modi government destroys 11,100 files

New Delhi, Jul 12: As many as 11,000 files were destroyed as per Prime Minister Narendra Modi's orders to weed out files and papers but none of these related to the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said.

Singh said this in a suo motu statement in Rajya Sabha two days after CPI-M MP P Rajeev alleged on the basis of media reports that 1.5 lakh files including those relating to the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi were destroyed on directions of the Prime Minister.

He said the files were destroyed after the Prime Minister stressed on improving work culture and hygiene and cleanliness of work place. A Cabinet Secretary instruction had said that "files and papers should be weeded out in accordance with rules of record keeping."

"In accordance with the instructions, the files lying in different sections of the Home Ministry were reviewed and a total of 11,100 files were destroyed during the period June 5-July 8 this year," he said.

"None of the 11,100 files so destroyed, relate to Mahatma Gandhi's assassination. This is also to inform that none of the files destroyed, related to either Rajendra Prasad, Lal Bahadur Shastri or Lord Mountbatten as alleged by the MP," the Home Minister said.

He said 52 files, 67 exhibits and 11,186 papers related to the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi were safe and secure in the national archives.

Mangaluru: Youth arrested for misleading Instagram post targeting police

Mangaluru: The Mangaluru CEN police have arrested a 23-year-old man for allegedly posting provocative and misleading content on an Instagram page named “mr_a_titude”, targeting the Bajpe police.

Mangaluru Commissioner of Police Sudheer Kumar Reddy C H identified the arrested as Abhishek M, a resident of Katipalla in Mangaluru.

A case has been registered at the Bajpe Police Station under Sections 353(1)(c), 353(2), 56, and 57 read with Section 189 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in connection with the post.

According to police, the accused uploaded a photograph of a hotel on the Instagram page and alleged that accused persons in a murder case under the Bajpe police jurisdiction were being given “royal treatment” by the police, including being served beef meals daily from the hotel.

The post further accused the police of supporting criminals, misusing their authority, and betraying public trust. Police said the content was provocative in nature and aimed at inciting public outrage against the police.

Following the post, a case was registered at the Bajpe police station, and further investigation was transferred to the CEN police station.

Police records indicate that the accused has a criminal history, with multiple cases registered against him, including murder, attempt to murder, assault, and robbery at the Surathkal Police Station, and one case at the Kaup Police Station.

The Commissioner said the accused was traced and arrested using technical evidence.
