Modi planning to deposit Rs 25K into BPL accounts before 2018 polls: Gowda

February 11, 2017

Bengaluru, Feb 11: JD(S) national president H D Deve Gowda on Friday charged Prime Minister Narendra Modi with planning to deposit Rs 25,000 into bank accounts of the poor ahead of the crucial 2018 Assembly elections in the state.

“Don’t take Modi lightly. I know his strategies. He is planning to deposit Rs 25,000 into bank accounts of those who are below the poverty line during the elections,” he stated, addressing party workers at a public rally at Palace Grounds as part of the preparations for 2018 elections in the state.

Gowda took exception to the Centre’s move to impose a cap of Rs 2,000 on anonymous cash donations to political parties. “We cannot take donations of more than Rs 2,000 from an individual according to the Centre’s move. How to build the party?...Go and beg for donations, if necessary. Each one of you (those aspiring to contest the next elections) has to mobilise at least Rs 2 to 3 lakh in every constituency,” he stated.

The party will field its candidates in all 224 constituencies. The leaders should not be under the delusion that the ticket to contest the elections is assured if they pose for a photograph with Kumaraswamy. Only those who work selflessly for the party will be given the ticket, he added.

Kumaraswamy said he will announce complete waiver of farm loans if the party comes to power in the next election and exhorted the workers to reach the target of winning at least 113 seats in the election (the simple majority required to form the government).

JD(S) MLA from Mahalakshmi Layout constituency K Gopalaiah attended the convention, a day after the party revoked his suspension. But seven other suspended party legislators kept off the convention.

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

•    Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

•    State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

•    Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.
