Bengaluru, Sept 6: Demanding that the State government should immediately convene a special session of the legislature and table the Anwar Manippady report on encroachment of Wakf properties, the BJP legislators today staged a protest in front of the Mahatma Gandhi statue at Vidhana Soudha, here.
The saffron party also demanded a CBI probe into the alleged multi-billion Wakf property scam.
“The Congress-JD(S) coalition masquerades as the champion of minorities. If the government is truly committed, why isn’t the Manippady report being tabled in the legislature? That too, despite strictures by courts?” BJP general secretary C T Ravi said at the agitation.
The report had charged that Wakf properties to the tune of Rs 2 lakh crore had been encroached across the state and named several state and national Congress leaders.
Manippady, the former Karnataka State Minority Commission Chairman, who prepared the report, submitted it to the government in March 2012 while the BJP was in power.
“There’s a threat to my life. Even this morning I received an internet call. But I will not stop demanding justice,” Manippady, who was also part of the protest, said.
"The high court has stated that it will take a serious view if the report is not tabled. The BJP will hold a statewide agitation if the report is not placed before the legislature,” he said.
Kota Srinivasa Poojary, Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council, said that the Karnataka High Court’s order on August 30 giving an ultimatum of four weeks to table the report was a slap on the face of the government. The court’s directive was definitely a message to the government that it was trying to suppress facts and avoiding tabling the report, he said.
BJP leaders Abdul Azeem, R Ashoka, S Suresh Kumar, D H Shankaramurthy, Mahantesh Kavatagimath and others took part in the protest.
