Mangaluru, Sep 3: A group of activists including Democratic Youth Federation of India State president Muneer Katipalla were arrested on Thursday when they staged a protest against Mangalore Special Economic Zone at Jokatte in Mangaluru taluk on Thursday.

In last two months this is for the second time anti-pollution activists being arrested by jurisdictional Surathkal police on charge of obstructing the MSEZ authorities from carrying out work on a corridor road in Jokatte.
The work on the approach road leading to MSEZ was commenced after Deputy Commissioner AB Ibrahim granted permission. Tight security had been deployed citing resistance from local residents.
However, a few activists of Jokatte Nagarika Horata Samiti led by Mr Katipalla continued to protest and laid down on the road. The police detained 18 agitators including Mr Katipall and took them to Surathkal police station in a van.
Sources said that at least 11 women were among those who were detained by the cops for obstructing MSEZ work.
Speaking to Coastaldigest.com, Mr Katipalla criticized the Deputy Commissioner for allowing MSEZ authorities to resume work.
The Jokatte Nagarika Horata Samiti has not been allowing any work on the corridor road for the last several months as a mark of protest against the alleged air and water pollution from MRPL’s coke and sulphur recovery units. The samiti led by Mr. Muneer had been demanding closure of the two units.
The samiti members and other residents had stopped movement of heavy vehicles towards the MSEZ area on July 3. As many as 33 persons were arrested by police on same charges while they were protesting against MSEZ on July 4. However, they were released following a protest.
