Udupi, Oct 10: A Muslim cattle trader was brutally assaulted by a gang over around 30 miscreants belong to Sangh Parivar at Karkala in Karnataka’s coastal district of Udupi.

The victim of last Tuesday’s attack, identified as Ibrahim Padubidri, is still undergoing treatment at a hospital in Udupi.

The murderous attack comes even as protests erupt across the country against the lynching of a Muslim man by Sangh Parivar activists after falsely accusing him of storing beef in house in Uttar Pradesh.

Police arrived in the nick of time and rescued a barely conscious Ibrahim who was returning after buying three cows and two calves from two Hindu farmers.

The assailants called him thief despite he tried to convince them that the cattle were sold to him by farmers.

Ibrahim, whose family has been in the cattle trade for three generations, said he was waylaid and attacked by around 30 men with metal rods and chains.

“The Bajrang Dal activists also abused and berated the two farmers, saying they should be ashamed of themselves for selling cows despite being Hindus. When the police arrived, the men forced a farmer to file a theft case against me,” he said.

Ibrahim denied the Bajrang Dal’s allegation that he was taking the cows to slaughter. “One of the five cows was pregnant. In Islam, it is a sin to kill a pregnant animal,” he said.

The Bajrang Dal’s Udupi district convenor, KR Sunil, claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was their 16th “cow rescue operation” in Udupi district in the last two months.

“We gave him (Ibrahim) a thrashing he won’t forget. This should be a lesson to others,” said Sunil.

Udupi SP K Annamalai said 10 Bajrang Dal activists had been arrested for the incident. “We have also arrested Ibrahim and admitted him to a hospital,” he said adding that transporting cattle in a jeep without permits is illegal.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has issued a high-alert warning to vehicle owners regarding a surge in cyber fraud targeting those looking to pay traffic violation fines. Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

•    Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

•    Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

•    Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

•    Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

•    State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

•    Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.
