Mysuru, Nov 23: Hundreds of officers and personnel from various wings of the police force including armed police, dog squad, women's police and traffic police took part in a special parade on Saturday organized to mark the silver jubilee of its Commissionerate at the City Armed Reserve (CAR) Grounds in the city. The City Police Commissionerate was set up in 1989 in Mysuru.

Speaking after taking a salute at the special parade, City Police Commissioner Dr M A Saleem said the style of policing needs to change from “police might” to “police service”, to be in line with the changing times.

Dr Saleem advised his colleagues to change their behaviour by conducting themselves with ease and dignity, towards making the department a people-friendly set up.

Referring to some of the complaints he had received against a few police officers, the Commissioner said that the society would no longer accept “arrogant” behaviour from the police. He asked the police personnel to be cool and ever-smiling, yet handle the situation with firmness expected of them.

He appreciated the commitment of the police force in preventing and detecting crime. “Chain snatching incidents have come down. The number of deaths due to road mishaps in the city was 87 so far this year, against the 148 reported last year,” he said and claimed that the City Police stood in the No. 1 spot among the 31 police divisions in the State.

Dr Saleem expressed concern over daylight burglaries being reported in the city and urged the police personnel to track down the culprits by studying their modus operandi. He said the City police will be observing a crime prevention month from December 1 and asked the police personnel to rededicate themselves to the task.

In all, 1,125 police personnel took out a colourful parade at the CAR police grounds. It included 16 troops of Law and Order wing, five of CAR, and one each of Women's, Airport and Wireless Units. Mounted police and sniffer dogs also took part in the parade to the applause of the gathering.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Educational institutions in Mangaluru that rely on the popular Mangala Stadium for their annual sports events are bracing for an inconvenience as the city's key sporting venue is set to close its gates for a significant upgrade. The stadium is expected to be unavailable for approximately two months starting from January 15, 2026.

The closure is necessitated by a proposed overhaul of the stadium's facilities, with a special focus on upgrading the synthetic track. Pradeep Dsouza, Assistant Director of the District of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES), Dakshina Kannada, confirmed the development.

"Experts have visited the stadium, conducted a thorough inspection, and have given the go-ahead for a complete makeover," Dsouza stated. "Funds have been allocated for the project, and we are currently awaiting the final green signal from state officials to commence the work. We anticipate that the work will likely begin in the second week of January. Consequently, we have stopped renting out the stadium to colleges and other organizations in preparation for the upgrade."

The timing presents a logistical challenge for colleges, as many schools have already concluded their sports meets.

"Colleges will now be organizing their events and will need to find alternative locations to host their sports meets," Dsouza added. He suggested a few potential venues, including the Dakshina Kannada police ground, University College grounds, Panambur grounds, Swaraj Maidan in Moodbidri, and the Mangalore University sports grounds in Konaje.

However, many institutions note that finding a comparable venue will be difficult. While the DK police ground and University College grounds are closer to the city center, they do not possess the extensive facilities and infrastructure offered by Mangala Stadium.

Dr. P Dayananda Pai - P Satisha Govt First Grade College, Carstreet, is one such institution dependent on the stadium. Principal Jayakar Bhandary expressed hope for a swift completion of the work. "We expect the work to be completed at the earliest. If not, we will be forced to look for other venues to host the sports day for our students," Bhandary said, highlighting the pressing need for the city's main sporting facility.
