Mangaluru, Aug 26: Slamming communal outfits and its leaders for misleading youths and encouraging immoral rowdyism in coastal Karnataka, Congress leader U T Khader urged the Mangaluru city police to take stringent action against those to disrupt peace in the society.

The health and family welfare minister told Coastaldidgiest.com that he spoke twice to Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Dr S Murugan after the brutal assault on a youth by Bajrang Dal miscreants in the heart of the city on Monday and urged him to take action against the gang leader of the assailants.

“Police have arrested over a dozen accused in connection with the assault. But this is not sufficient. Cops should nab their leaders too and teach them a lesson,” said Mr Khader.

He said that in the past the name of Murguan was creating terror in the hearts of the criminals and antisocial elements. “Now, the same Murugan is the top cop of Mangaluru. He should exhibit his efficiency by teaching a lesson to criminals and anti-social elements,” he said.

Lobo visits victim

Meanwhile, Mangaluru City (South) MLA J R Lobo visited the assault victim, who is recuperating at a private hospital in the city and assured him justice.

He said the police had been instructed to take stringent action against the perpetrators of crime.

Such incidents would not only defame the name of Mangaluru, but would also affect the cordial relations among different communities in the region, he said. It is unfortunate that such incidents were taking place in the district which is known as an “educated” district, Mr. Lobo said.

A 28-year-old Muslim youth working for supermarket at Attavar in the city was on Monday evening stripped, tied to an electric pole and beaten by a group of miscreants belonging to Sangh Parivar for allegedly being in company of his female colleague belonging to Hindu community.

Mangaluru police have arrested at least 13 persons in connection with the incident. They are Santhosh Poojary (23) of Padu Kudeera in Karkala taluk, Abhiram (23) of Babugudde, Kiran (29) of Hunasemakki, Praveen Shetty of Eligoli in Karkala, Bhujanga Shetty (46) of Siddakatte, Chandrakanth Rao (42) of Bejai, Ghanashyam Acharya (24) of Attavar Jain compound, Dhanush (20), Muthuraj (21), Kishan (20) of Babugudde, Naveen (42) of Melinamogaru, Vivek (38) of Babugudde and Kirankumar (25) of Attavar. All accused were remanded in judicial custody.

Udupi, Dec 15: What was meant to be a post-pilgrimage gathering turned tragic in Padukere village of Brahmavar taluk, Udupi district, late Sunday night, when a clash among youths escalated into a fatal assault, leaving one man dead.

Mangaluru: In a decisive move to tackle the city’s deteriorating sanitation infrastructure, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has announced a massive ₹1,200 crore action plan to overhaul its underground drainage (UGD) network.

The initiative, spearheaded by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV, aims to bridge "missing links" in the current system that have left residents grappling with overflowing sewage and environmental hazards.

The Breaking Point

The announcement follows a high-intensity phone-in session on Thursday, where the DC was flooded with grievances from frustrated citizens. Residents, including Savithri from Yekkur, described a harrowing reality: raw sewage from apartments leaking into stormwater drains, creating a "permanent stink" and turning residential zones into mosquito breeding grounds.

"We are facing immense difficulties due to the stench and the health risks. Local officials have remained silent until now," one resident reported during the session.

The Strategy: A Six-Year Vision

DC Darshan HV confirmed that the proposed plan is not a temporary patch but a comprehensive six-year roadmap designed to accommodate Mangaluru’s projected population growth. Key highlights of the plan include:

•    Infrastructure Expansion: Laying additional pipelines to connect older neighborhoods to the main grid.

•    STP Crackdown: Stricter enforcement of Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) regulations. While new apartments are required to have functional STPs, many older buildings lack them entirely, and several newer units are reportedly non-functional.

•    Budgetary Push: The plan has already been discussed with the district in-charge minister and the Secretary of the Urban Development Department. It is slated for formal presentation in the upcoming state budget.

SHRIMP.jpg

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.
