Speaking at a press meet here on Friday, JD (S) state secretary M G Hegde said that the party did not object to the establishment of a central Tipu Sultan University in the state.
“The question here is, after a long governance of Congress at the Centre, why has it taken up the issue now at the time of elections? And why is the BJP opposing the decision? Both the parties are merely trying to cash on the voters in the name of the central university, by dividing the communities. The BJP is trying to gain the votes of the Hindu community, while the Congress is trying to woo the minorities. We do not want political parties creating a controversy on such a sensitive issue right before elections,” he said.
He further condemned the statements of writer and scholar M Chidananda Murthy for opposing the decision to name the proposed university after Tipu Sultan. “As a writer, he should mould young minds, not destroy them by making disparaging statements on the issue. We strongly condemn his statements,” he said.
JD(S) candidate from Mangalore South A Sadananda Shetty endorsing Hegde's words came down heavily on both the national parties.
Mr Hegde said that the names of other candidates from the party for the upcoming elections would be revealed in the coming days.
JD (S) leaders Azeez Malar, J Mohammed, D M Aslam, Shaukat Ali and others were present at the press meet.
