Karnataka, Nov 7: Even a week after the mysterious death of the 14-year-old girl in Tirthahalli, the protests and agitations have continued in various parts of Karnataka by Hindutva outfits. On the other hand students of schools and colleges across the state also are staging protests against increasing number of case of violence against girls.
The bandh call given by Hindutva outfits backed by opposition BJP as part of the alleged politicization of Nandita's death was near total in many places on Thursday.
In Chikkamagaluru city, shop owners voluntarily shut down the shops from morning to evening to support the bandh. Schools and colleges, cinema theatres, hotels and cinema theatres remained closed. M G Road, I G Road and Market Road wore a deserted look due to closure of shops and absence of customers. Several students who were not aware of bandh, were seen returning home from schools and colleges in the morning.
As buses and auto-rickshaws too remained off road, few passengers who were out on the street for emergency purposes underwent a tough time. As a part of bandh, members of Hindu outfits staged a protest and a rally in the city. The protesters alleged the government of misusing police department to protect the accused in the death of Nandita. They submitted a memorandum to the additional deputy commissioner.
In Muduigere town the bundh evoked mixed response. Akhila Bharathiya Vidhyarthi Parishat (ABVP) wanted the intervention of the Governor in Nanditha's death case and order for CBI probe into the incident, to bring truth behind death of 14-years-old girl.
Addressing the gathering during a protest organised as a part of college bandh, at Government Girls College in Muduigere town, ABVP Chikmagalur District Pramukh Dhanikh Kodaninne said that Nandita's parents have expressed their concern that politicians may influence the CID probe. Already the government has started claiming that there is no need of CBI inquiry. So, the Governor should interfere in the issue and order for the CBI enquiry, he demanded.
A similar bandh, called by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, Arya Idiga Yuvaka Sangha and other organisations to condemn the delay in arresting the culprits responsible for the death of the minor girl, evoked a good response in Sorab town.
Shops, hotels and other commercial establishments remained closed. The district administration had declared a holiday for schools and colleges. The Sorab Taluk Bar Association extended support to the bandh and advocates remained away from court.
Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad activists staged a demonstration in Shivamogga city on Thursday and burnt an effigy of the State government. The protesters alleged that vested interests were putting pressure on the police to hush up the case. Protests and demonstrations were held in other parts of the states too.
