Bengaluru, Dec 6: Chief minister HD Kumaraswamy on Wednesday urged scientists to develop applications that can help in food preservation and soil protection on priority, even as he applauded ongoing efforts in the field of nanoscience.
Speaking at the inaugural of the 10th edition of Bengaluru India Nano, a two-day event on nanoscience and technology, the CM said, “Nanoscience has applications in healthcare, IT, energy, electronics and aerospace sectors. I am happy that Karnataka is at the forefront of innovation in the field. But I think food preservation and soil protection must be a priority as it directly impacts people and is the need of the hour.”
Renowned scientist Prof CNR Rao also urged scientists to develop technologies that can detect diseases at an early stage and thereby aid in prolonging life and even cure patients.
“I have been challenging people in the field to develop a nano nose that can detect diseases like cancer. And I am hopeful that they will do it,” he said.
Both Rao and Kumaraswamy pointed out the advantages of pursuing science in Karnataka, emphasising that nanotechnology is the future.
S Sampath, professor, department of inorganic and physical chemistry, IISc, was conferred the Prof CNR Rao Bengaluru India Nanoscience 2018 Award.
Yury Gogotsi, university and trustee chair professor, department of materials science and engineering, Drexel University, Philadelphia, US, said: “Nano looks like a small technology, but it can become a very big business for India and the world.”
Pointing out that the nano industry is poised to grow at an annual rate of 17% to touch $125 billion in the next five years, Gaurav Gupta, principal secretary, IT-BT and industries department, urged entrepreneurs and industries to invest in the field. Kumaraswamy added that the state was committed to create an ecosystem that supports the field.
