Mangaluru, Nov 7: In what can be termed as a case of death due to negligence, a truck driver died on the spot after a heavy container fell on his truck at the New Mangaluru Port Trust (NMPT) harbour, here, last night.
The victim has been identified as Vinod Poojary (58), resident of Vamanjoor on the outskirts of the city. He was working as truck driver for the last 17 years at Delta Infralogistics. He is survived by his wife Jalajakshi and two children.
The tragedy took place on at around 9 p.m. when the container loaded in the truck, driven by Vinod, slipped and rolled into the driver's cabin.
Vinod was immediately rushed to NMPT hospital, where doctors pronounced him brought dead.
Meanwhile, the workers fraternity has alleged that the negligence by the authorities concerned led to the tragedy.
Satish Poojary, the President of Mangaluru chapter of the All India Central Council of Trade Unions (AICCTU), stated that collective negligence by NMPT, safety officers and management of Delta Infralogistics led to the death of Vinod.
He said that the container slipped because it was not hooked properly in the groove. He pointed out that this was not the first case of negligence of safety standards at NMPT.
In a complaint lodged at jurisdictional Panambur police station by Yashodhara, 38, a colleague of the victim, has blamed the supervisors Manohar, Pritam and the company management for death.
