Mangaluru, Dec 3: The district administration has proposed to set up a memorial park in memory of the air crash victims who lost their lives in the Air India Express flight crash that occurred in May 2010.
Speaking at a meeting with authorities from Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) and other concerned officials at his office here on Wednesday, Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim said that the stretch of land on the road leading from Kulur to Thannirbavi on the outskirts of the city would be used to establish a memorial in memory of the 158 victims of the air crash.

Although disconnected from the airport premises, the memorial close to the national highway will be convenient for passers-by to visit and pay their respects to the victims, the deputy commissioner opined.
Mr Ibrahim also said that since the narrow stretch of 43 cents of land available would not be able to accommodate any building or structure, a park would be outlined as a memorial in the space available.
Venkatesh Bhat from Mangaluru International Airport Users' Forum suggested that a plague should be erected on the stretch bearing names of all the victims who lost their lives in the fatal accident.
MIA airport manager Air India Sudhir Bhat suggested that a useful public facility such as a library could be established as part of the memorial. Mr Ibrahim said that better options could have been explored for the memorial if there was availability of larger plot of land.
He directed the officials to finalise the proposal for the public park at Thannirbavi within a period of 5-6 months so that it could be brought into implementation without much delay.
MIA Airport Director T Radhakrishnan, former airport director M R Vasudeva, officials from New Mangalaru Port Trust (NMPT), additional deputy commissioner Sadashiv Prabhu and others were present.
