Bengaluru, Oct 1: Karnataka Urban Development and Housing Minister U T Khader today said urbanisation and globalisation had affected the close bond between the elders and their young ones and this trend should be reversed where the young encouraged to spend more time with their parents and grand parents rather than just having an occasional contact.
Speaking at a function organised as part of ‘International Day For Elderly People’ by New Delhi based Eldercare organisation, which is supported by retired personnel of Indian Armed Forces, he said the new world order had hit the close bond between the young and their elders and it was time the old Indian tradition was restored.
‘’This Day should mark a change in the mindset of youth who are distancing themselves from elders due to their work pressure and modern day lifestyle. Families becoming smaller in urban areas has put elders in difficult situation and sending them to elders homes should be curbed. These veterans expect little money from their young ones but more of love, affection and care,’’ he said.
He said institutions like Eldercare are facilitators in the society to give strength to elders but all section of the society should join the campaign for their own good. ‘’Youth should spend more time with their elders and realise how fulfilling that experience will be,’’ he added.
Eldercare Chairman Vishwas Tripathi, while speaking at the function said elders will remain the guiding force for the family and the society and their rich knowledge and love comes for free for the younger ones in the family. ‘’Growing old is the law of nature but to support the old who gave their might to help the younger ones in the family and society, should be recognised,’’ he said.
Mr Tripathi, who is also the Chairman of United News of India (UNI) said Eldercare was taking out a nation-wide campaign to educate people on the importance of proper care of older generation and was focussed in educating the younger generation of its importance.
Karnataka Health Minister Shivanand Patil, in his message said, India having demographic advantage of majority of people being below 25 years was not entirely true, as even the present generation was getting old and proportion of elder population, which was rising, should be taken note of. The old age levels will start increasing in India in coming decades and the demographic advantage of today could change to a demographic challenge.
His message was read out by Mr Patil’s daughter Samitha Patil who is a practicing lawyer.
