Bengaluru, Dec 8: As a New Year gift, the state government has decided to promote 11,000 police personnel.

At a review meeting held on Wednesday, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said this is the first time such a huge number of police personnel are being promoted.

“Police constables will be promoted as head constables (HC). Head constables, in turn, will be promoted as assistant sub-inspectors (ASI). ASIs will be promoted as sub-inspectors,” he said.

“Policemen work hard to maintain law and order and to keep a check on crime. Hence, we will have to reward them appropriately. Measures are also being taken to fill vacancies. We have already recruited 26,702 police constables and other staff and approved various allowances,” he added.

In 2014-15, around 1,445 posts were sanctioned for 31 new police stations. In 2015-16, as many as 1,356 posts were filled in 30 new police stations. In 2016-17, another 220 posts were created in five new women police stations, said a senior police officer present at the meeting.

During the meeting, it was announced that Hoskote in Bengaluru rural, Ramadurga and Athani in Belagavi and Shorapur in Kalaburagi districts have been made new sub-divisions.

A new commissionerate will also be established in Ballari, keeping in mind the rise in law and order problems and criminal activities in connection with the mining mafia.

A KSRP training school at Kangrali will be set up and 76 posts will be approved. Around 468 posts have been created in six training schools, 322 in the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB), 309 in the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), 45 posts for six new police outposts and 1,557 posts for Bengaluru Traffic police department.

Deal with iron hand'

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah directed senior police officers to deal with their subordinates involved in illegal activities with an iron hand.

Siddaramaiah told the brass not to protect corrupt police officials.

“In recent times, we have information that police personnel are involved in land disputes and real estate deals. It is also known that they are helping businessman and blackmoney hoarders to convert cash to white. This cannot be tolerated in a department known for discipline,” he said.

He added that retaining such personnel in the force is a shame. “They should be removed. Since several illegal activities involving the police are coming to light, people are losing faith in the department. Senior police officers should take strict action against such elements,” added Siddaramaiah

He also wondered how people can have faith in the police when innocent people are not getting justice and anti-social elements are protected.

Mangaluru, Dec 16: The Mangaluru City police have significantly escalated their campaign against drug trafficking, arresting 25 individuals and booking 12 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act between November 30 and December 13. The crackdown resulted in the seizure of a substantial quantity of illicit substances, including 685.6 grams of MDMA and 1.5 kg of ganja.

The success of this recent drive has been significantly boosted by the city’s innovative, QR code-based anonymous reporting system.

"The anonymous reporting system has received an encouraging response. Several recent arrests were made based on inputs received through this system, helping police tighten the noose around drug peddlers," said the City Police Commissioner.

The latest arrests contribute to a robust year-to-date record, underscoring the police's relentless commitment to combating the drug menace.

Up to December 14 this year, the police have registered a total of 107 cases of drug peddling, leading to the arrest of 219 peddlers. Furthermore, they have booked 562 cases of drug consumption, resulting in the arrest of 671 individuals.

The scale of the seizure for the year reflects the magnitude of the problem being tackled: police have seized 320.6 kg of ganja worth ₹88.7 lakh and 1.4 kg of MDMA valued at ₹1.2 crore. Other significant seizures include hydro-weed ganja worth ₹94.7 lakh and cocaine worth ₹1.9 lakh, among others.

The Commissioner emphasized a policy of rigorous enforcement: "We ensure that peddlers are caught red-handed so that they cannot later dispute the case or claim innocence."

To counter the rising trend of substance abuse among youth, the Mangaluru City police have rolled out uniform guidelines for random drug testing across educational institutions.

As part of the drive, tests were conducted in approximately 100 institutions, screening an estimated 5,500 to 6,000 students in the first phase. 20 students tested positive for drug consumption during the initial screening.

Students who tested positive have been provided counselling and are scheduled for re-testing in the second quarter. The testing will also be expanded to students not covered in the first phase. In a move to ensure strict implementation, police personnel were deployed in mufti in some institutions. Reiterating a zero-tolerance stance, the Commissioner confirmed that random testing will continue, and colleges have also been instructed to conduct drug tests at the time of admission to deter substance abuse from an early stage.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.
