Mangaluru, Jul 3: A city-based builder was left poorer by Rs 18 lakh as a house maid and security guard employed by him without verifying their background decamped together with cash and valuables on Saturday.

The builder, P.N. Rao, had given an advertisement in a local newspaper seeking a maid and a security guard for his house. Jyothi (22) and Shiva (32), who claimed to be from Dharwad, answered the call. Rao employed them 11 days ago, providing them accommodation in an outhouse adjoining his house.

Around 4.30 a.m. on Saturday, Rao and his family left the house to visit a relative. They returned around 9 p.m. and found that silver articles and Rs. 18 lakh cash kept inside the house were missing. Both Jyothi and Shiva were nowhere to be found, the police said.

Rao then checked CCTV footage and found Jyothi and Shiva entering the house by breaking open the front door. The police, who searched the premises, found a bag containing the silver articles stolen from the house lying abandoned a few metres away.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Sanjeev M. Patil said Rao had not checked the antecedents of the two with the police before employing them. He had also not taken their ID proofs.
