Mangalore, June 14: It will be the chirps of truly exotic variety that will greet bird lovers when they visit the Dr Shivaram Karanth Biological Park at Pilikula near here on Tuesday. In a move aimed at augmenting the bird collection at the third largest biological park in Karnataka, the authorities at the park here have decided to introduce eight varieties of exotic birds for the first time in its history. The park already has 620 animals covering 77 species.

So come Tuesday one can now see the Blue Gold Macaw (scientific name Ara araruana), Green Wing Macaw (Ara cholropterus), Mutation Rose Ring Necked Parakeet (Psittacula Karameri), Citron Cocktoo (Cacatua sulphurea citinocristata), Congo African Grey (Psittacus erithacus), Sun Conure (Aratinga solstitiallis), Galah Cockatto (Eolothus roseicapilla) and the Channel Billed Toucan at specially designed enclosures up close and personal.

These exotic birds, H Jayaprakash Bhandary, director of the Park told TOI have been gifted by a Bangalore based exotic bird breeder Abdul Rahman Fayaz. He is a true bird lover and his only condition (while gifting the birds) was to allow him to visit the Park whenever he is in town to see how the birds are faring, Bhandary said. The Macaws and the Toucans would be in pairs and the other species of birds in numbers ranging from four to six each.

An important aspect considered while introducing these birds that have their origin in South and Central America, Northern area of South America, North and Central Africa, India, Myanmar and Southern China to name a few is their adaptability to the local environment. We have created enclosures in a manner that they mimic the natural biological requirements of these birds, Bhandary said adding that inputs from Fayaz have been of great help.

Once these exotic birds adjust to the local environment, park authorities also have plans to allow visitors to hold these trained birds on their hands and take photographs for a fee. This is something that we have in mind and could be a reality once the monsoon ends, he said. The exotic birds are locally bred by breeders such as Fayaz; he said adding plans are afoot to introduce Ostrich to the Park. A spacious enclosure is coming up for them, he added.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday attacked the BJP over the obscene video case in Hassan district by questioning who gave the accused Prajwal Revanna a visa to go abroad. He also hit out at Union Minister Amit Shah asking why did he gave a ticket to Hassan JD(S) MP Prajwal, who is the accused in the sex scandal case.

He alleged that former Prime Minister and JD(S) supremo H D Deve Gowda planned the escape of his grandson and Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna abroad.

“Who gives passport and visa for travelling abroad? It’s the Centre. Can he go without the Centre’s knowledge? It was former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda who planned and sent him abroad,” the Chief Minister said.

"Prajwal pen drives case is not related to DCM DK Shivakumar. Why did Amit Shah give a ticket to the accused of a sex scandal?" he questioned.

Siddaramaiah also wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting him to direct the Ministry of External Affairs and Ministry of Home Affairs to cancel the Diplomatic Passport issued to Prajwal Revanna and ensure his return to face the law.

Prajwal is accused in an alleged sex scandal which is under investigation by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the Karnataka government. He is believed to have escaped to Germany shortly after polling in the first phase of elections in the state got over on April 26, in which Prajwal was the JD(S)-BJP combine's candidate from Hassan.

The Karnataka CM said that SIT will conduct an investigation in a transparent manner in the case.

Earlier, Siddaramaiah wrote on X, "The government has decided to form a special investigation team in connection with Prajwal Revanna's obscene video case. Obscene video clips are circulating in Hassan district, where it appears that women have been sexually assaulted."

Udupi: Udupi became the second city on the Karnataka coast after Mangaluru to launch water rationing, a senior official said on Tuesday.

Commissioner of the Udupi City Municipal Corporation Rayappa said that the rationing system will come into force from Wednesday and will continue till the water in the reservoir reaches comfortable levels.

The dam built across the Swarna river at a place called Baje, which is the only source of water for Udupi city, recorded 3.25 meters of water as against the top level of 6.30 meters.

The decision of water rationing will be reviewed periodically until the reservoir regains its fullest levels, the official said.

The Mangaluru City Corporation resorted to water rationing on Saturday following declining water levels in the reservoir built across the Nethravati river at Thumbe.

Mangaluru: A native of Kerala was arrested on charge of misbehaving with crew on an Air India Express flight while travelling from Dubai to Mangaluru International Airport. The man even threatened to jump from the aircraft, according to officials.

Siddartha Das, the security coordinator for Air India Express, lodged a complaint against the passenger, identified as Muhammad BC from Kannur, Kerala, after which he was caught by the airport security once the flight landed at Mangaluru. He was later handed over to the police.

DCP (Law and Order) Sidharth Goyal said the incident occurred on Flight IX814 on May 8.

When the flight was above the sea, Muhammad reportedly said he wanted to get off the plane, posing a threat to all on board. The unruly flyer was detained by airport security once the flight landed at Mangaluru International Airport and he was handed over to Bajpe police station officials.

Sources added once the flight took off from Dubai, the accused went to the lavatory and thereafter started inquiring with the cabin crew about a person named Krishna who was not on the flight. Muhammad kept on pressing the bell for in-flight assistance, even though the cabin crew members were near at hand. He then picked up a life jacket, gave it to a crew member, and said he wanted to use it upon landing.
