Youth ray of hope to cut growth of corruption'

Kundapur, July 9: ''Youth power is a ray of hope to cut short the unrestricted growth of corruption. Youths should have zero tolerance towards corruption. Mass banning the corrupt people is the only solution to curb corruption,'' opined Lokayukta Justice N Santosh Hegde.

Addressing students here at an interaction programme on “National Lokpal Bill and Controlling the Corruption” organised by the Bhandarkars Arts and Science College, Kundapur and Bhandarkars College Old Students Union at the College Auditorium on Friday, he said there is a need for strong campaign against corruption. There seems to be hope in this direction. Optimistic attitude against corruption should be inculcated among youths. Corruption is deeply rooted in society since its birth. The heights of corruption have stretched to extreme level. Youths should take the lead to curtail the growth of corruption. This is my 236th interaction programme with students. Greed over need is a sort of communicable disease. Youths should be contented with the income that is earned legally. The persons who are not elected by the people are not authorised to question the elected representatives for their fraud deeds. They are termed as unelected tyrants, he regretted.

Later interacting with the students, Hegde said “If UPA government agrees to include the remaining eight demands by the civil society, I will convince my fellow men in the team to drop the proposal of including Prime Minister and Supreme Court Chief Justice under the purview of Jan Lokpal Bill.

The UPA government is misleading people by only highlighting two issues, and sidelining the remaining other eight demands made by us. Executive, Judiciary and Legislature should have equal representation in the Lokpal Samiti as against government's demand to include majority of politicians.”

Replying to queries of media persons, he said the Lokayukta police have done a good job by filing chargesheet against Katta Subramanya Naidu's son. It should have taken place long back, however it was delayed owing to the stay order. The case has been filed against Katta, his son and the officials who supported them.

“The case will appear before court on Monday. They are planning to challenge it. We have to see the future course of action,” he added.

Udupi: A 40-year-old NRI from Udupi has reportedly lost more than Rs 12.25 lakh in an online investment scam operated through Telegram.

According to a complaint filed at the CEN police station, Leo Jerome Mendonsa, who has been working in Dubai for the past 15 years in computer accessories sales, maintains NRI accounts in Karkala and Nitte.

On November 12, 2025, Mendonsa was added to a Telegram group called Instaflow Earnings by unknown individuals. Users identified as Priya and Dipannita persuaded him to invest in “Revenue Tasks.” Initially, Mendonsa transferred Rs 1,100 multiple times and received the promised returns, encouraging him to continue.

On November 14, another user, Nishmitha Shetty, directed him to register on a website, digitvisionuoce.cc, and invest Rs 4 lakh in various shares. Over the next few days, he made multiple transfers totaling Rs 12,25,000, including Rs 50,000 via Google Pay, believing the scheme was legitimate.

After receiving the money, the alleged handlers stopped responding, and neither the invested amount nor the promised profits were returned.

The CEN police have registered a case under Sections 66(C) and 66(D) of the IT Act and Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and investigations are ongoing.

Udupi, Nov 22: The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has officially confirmed Narendra Modi’s visit to Udupi on November 28 and shared his detailed schedule with the Karnataka chief secretary.

According to the itinerary, the Prime Minister will land at Mangaluru International Airport from Delhi at 11:05 am and depart for Udupi by helicopter at 11:10 am. He is expected to arrive at the Adi Udupi helipad at 11:35 am.

The earlier plan for a roadshow has been cancelled. Instead, PM Modi will proceed directly to Sri Krishna Math at 12 pm, where he will have darshan of Sri Krishna and address participants of the Laksha Kanta Geetha Gayana event.

The Prime Minister is scheduled to depart from the Adi Udupi helipad at 1:35 pm, returning to Mangaluru Airport before leaving for Goa at 2 pm.

The state administration has been directed to make all necessary arrangements for the visit.

Mangaluru: Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy C H has warned of strict action against individuals spreading rumours and attempting to create insecurity within the Muslim community and fuel hatred between Hindus and Muslims through social media.

Referring to a recent social media post alleging that police personnel had entered a masjid premises to check whether beef was being cooked, the commissioner said miscreants were attempting to push their communal agenda. 

“A group of people, both from Mangaluru and abroad, are trying hard to spread rumours. For the past 10 days, they have been attempting to rake up old issues, highlight routine matters as controversies, or fabricate news altogether,” he said.

He reiterated that any such attempts to disturb communal harmony would invite legal action. “Cases will be registered and the accused will be brought to book,” he stated.
