Bantwal, August 20: Cash and jewellery worth Rs lakhs were reported to be stolen from two houses in a serial theft at Ukkuda of Kasba village in Bantwal Taluk on Friday late night.
Thieves gained entry into the house of Mohammed Razzak, by breaking open the front door and made away with Rs 30,000. Clothes kept in the cup-board were scattered while searching for other valuables kept at house.
They also stole 19 pawans of gold and Rs 95,000 in cash from 'Noor Mahal', the residence of Mohammed Shareef after a forced entry through the back door.
Mohammed Shareef's father Kunhi Monu Haji was the treasurer of the Ukkuda Masjid Committee and had kept Rs 70,000 belonging to the Masjid at his house. Thieves have stolen this money.
Both thefts are said to have occurred between 7:00pm and 10:00pm, when the residents of both the houses had visited their relatives' house on account of Ramdan.
The theft came to light when they returned home at 10 pm.
Rakshith, Inspector, Vittla police station investigated the scene on Friday night. A team of finger print experts and dog squad rushed to the spot and conducted preliminary investigations. Laabu Ram, Superintendent of Police, Dakshin Kannada, Rohini Katocha, Assistant Superintendent of Police, also visited the crime scene on Saturday.
Police have repeatedly failed to capture the thieves behind the serial thefts that have occurred in Vittla, B C Road and Saletthur. Ukkuda has been the recent victim of serial theft, which increases the uneasiness among the public.
