DC, Commissioner saffron shawl issue: SHRC demands report

Mangalore, May 1: The State Human Rights Commission has asked Mysore Regional Commissioner to investigate and submit a report on the saffron shawl episode involving Chennappa Gowda, DK Deputy Commissioner and Seemanth Kumar Singh, Commissioner of Police, Mangalore.

The duo is also scheduled to appear before the Regional Commissioner on May 7.

Background

On December 11, 2011, a flood lit sports event had taken place at Sri Rama Vidya Kendra, Kalladka, near here, run by RSS leader Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat. Mr. Gowda and Mr. Singh, who had attended the event as chief guests, were seen donning saffron shawls throughout the programme.

The act had attracted criticism from various quarters. Karnataka Komu Souharda Vedike (KKSV) had complained to the State Human Rights Commission, Karnataka Lokayukta, and Home Secretaries at both State and Centre expressing concern that such an act by two people in responsible positions may intensify the sense of insecurity among minorities and spoil the secular social fabric.

The State Human Rights Commission has acknowledged the appeal of the Vedike and accordingly the office of the Mysore Regional Commissioner will initiate investigation.

Heading to Karavali Utsava? Check traffic changes and parking rules in Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Dec 20: The Mangaluru City Police have issued a detailed traffic advisory ahead of the inaugural ceremony of Karavali Utsava, which will be held at the Karavali Utsava Ground on Saturday.

The festival will be inaugurated at 6:00 pm by Dakshina Kannada District Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao. Cultural and public programmes will be held at the venue every evening and will continue until January 2.

According to City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy, parking of vehicles is strictly prohibited on both sides of the road from Lalbagh to Karavali Utsava Ground. Visitors are requested to park their vehicles only at designated parking areas.

To help the public, traffic signboards and parking guidance flex boards have been installed along the routes leading to the venue. The police have urged commuters and visitors to follow these instructions to ensure smooth traffic movement.

The police have appealed to the public to cooperate by following traffic rules and parking guidelines to avoid inconvenience during the festival.
